The Twi Alphabet

The Twi language is one of the many dialects spoken in Ghana.
Twi is also known as Akan—the Twi alphabet comprises 31 letters, 7 vowels, and 24 consonants.





 

Vowels

Pronouctation of vowels in Twi

a - pronounced like the "a" in "cat"

e - pronounced like the "e" in "bed"

ɛ - pronounced like the "e" in "let" but slightly open

i - pronounced like the "i" in "bit"

o - pronounced like the "o" in "pot"

ɔ - pronounced like the "o" in "top" but slightly open

u - pronounced like the "u" in "put"

Consonants

Pronuciation of Consonants in Twi

b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, s, t, w, y - pronounced the same as in English

Ɔ - pronounced like the "o" in "not" but slightly open

Ɛ - pronounced like the "e" in "pet" but slightly open

Ɔ̈ - pronounced as a nasal sound similar to the "on" in "song," indicated by the "̈" above the letter

ny - pronounced like the "ny" in "canyon"

hw - pronounced like the "wh" in "when"

kp - pronounced with a slight air release at the end, similar to "cup"

kw - pronounced like the "kw" in "kwacha"

gy - pronounced like the "dj" in "job"

Ɔh - pronounced like the "oh" sound in "coat" but slightly open
